Akçansa, a joint venture of Sabanci Holding and HeidelbergCement, was founded in 1996. The company is the leading producer of cement and ready-mixed concrete in Turkey. Operating in the Marmara, Aegean, and Black Sea regions of Turkey, Akçansa produces cement at its Istanbul, Çanakkale, and Ladik plants, and operates 9 cement terminals. The company also produces ready-mixed concrete at nearly 40 ready-mixed concrete plants under the “Betonsa” brand, and operates the Ayazağa, Bursa, and Saray aggregate quarries under the brand “Agregasa”. The Karçimsa cement grinding and packaging plant has been in operation since 1998, following the formation of a partnership between Karabük Demir Çelik İşletmeleri (49%) and Akçansa (51%).

Akçansa continues to grow in line with the company's vision of sustainable growth, and with a focus on success in all markets. With its “0” accident goal policy and placing the greatest emphasis on the “human” factor, Akçansa founded the Health & Safety Academy at its Büyükçekmece and Çanakkale plants. Through this initiative, Akçansa aims at educating 5,000 people with 80,000 hours of training per year, including theoretical and practical workshops for its own employees, but also for shareholders and suppliers.

Within HeidelbergCement's efforts to improve environmental protection and support local communities, a strategic role is played by implementation of efficient CSR programmes and campaigns dedicated to protecting the environment through permanent waste co-processing programmes. With its use of alternative fuels and raw materials, which are vital for protecting the environment and natural resources, as well as launching new efficiency projects, Akçansa is a sustainability leader in Turkey. The company published its 3rd Sustainability Report in line with GRI G4 principles, and has signed the UN Global Compact. In Carbon Disclosure Project (CDP) report, Akçansa is identified as one of the leading companies in Turkey by voluntarily responding to CDP, as it has for the last four years. Akçansa ranked among the most transparent companies with a score of 92D this year. Akçansa was named “Most Admired Company” in its industry by Capital Magazine for the 15th time in 2015. Its 100+ Concrete product was awarded in the Most Environmental and Innovative Product category.
