HeidelbergCement has been active in Spain since the acquisition of Hanson in August 2007. Our subsidiary Hanson Hispania produces aggregates and ready-mixed concrete. Hanson Hispania, based in Madrid, operates 8 aggregates sites and 10 ready-mixed concrete plants. The main markets are: Barcelona, Bilbao, Asturias, Madrid, Mallorca, Zaragoza, Levante, and Valladolid.
Since the acquisition of the Italcementi Group in the second half of 2016, FYM is our new subsidiary in Spain. FYM operates in the cement, ready-mixed concrete, and aggregates businesses. With an industrial network of 3 cement plants in Malaga, Añorga (San Sebastian), and Arrigorriaga (Bilbao), 5 ready-mixed concrete batching units, 4 quarries, 1 distribution centre, and 3 logistic centres, FYM holds the cement market leaderships in the Basque Country and is one of the main producers in Andalusia. In both areas it also holds a presence in the production and commercialisation of concrete and aggregates.
The revamping of Malaga plant is the biggest ever investment in Malaga coming from a private source, and especially designed to meet environmental requirements and implement BAT (Best Available Technologies). As a result of this, power consumption, dust and gas emissions showed considerably low values. The new facilities have allowed the use of alternative fuels, reaching a substitution rate of more than 35%.
The 2 cement plants in the Basque Country made several investments in the last years to adapt the facilities to the higher environmental standards, like cement silos in Arrigorriaga and a 45,000 tonnes clinker silo in Añorga.
In Spain, the economy grew again in 2015 after a long economic downturn, with an increase in gross domestic product of 3.2%. However, the construction activity still suffered as a result of the property crisis, the only slowly improving high unemployment rate, and particularly the government’s budget cuts, which resulted in a further reduction in infrastructure expenditure.
