Second Severn Crossing
Over a distance of roughly 5 km, the Second Severn Crossing spans the mouth of the Severn River between Bristol and Cardiff.
The central span is a cable-stayed bridge measuring 456 m, carried by two 137 metre-tall concrete pylons and with a height clearance of 37 m from the road surface. The tidal range in this area of the Severn Estuary is 14.5 m. The bridge features three lanes for traffic in either direction, as well as a full width shoulder.
The bridge was built almost entirely of precast concrete elements. HeidelbergCements subsidiary Hanson UK supplied the 320,000 m3 of concrete and 60,000 t of Regen needed for the project. The use of Regen substantially reduces CO2 emissions associated with concrete manufacture.
