“1. Mart” Tunnel

The “1. Mart” Tunnel (1st of March Tunnel) is one of the most significant landmarks along the Corridor Vc highway through Bosnia and Herzegovina.

The total length of the tunnel is slightly more than 2,900 meters, depending on the tube, while the total length of both tunnel tubes is 5,680 meters. The “1. Mart” Tunnel is a part of the Pan-European Corridor Vc and, as such, the construction standards applied are in accordance with European norms (i.e. European Directive on Road Tunnel Safety applies in full).

Each 250 meters there is a connection between the two tunnel tubes, serving as an evacuation route, while there are passages each 1,000 meters (two in total) for emergency vehicle access. The tunnel complex is equipped with a full array of safety systems: alternating signals, fire alarms, hydrants network, radio connection, and video surveillance, while monitoring is handled from the maintenance and traffic control operations center in Drivuša.

The “1. Mart” tunnel is among the five longest tunnels in former-Yugoslavia and, more importantly, one of the safest. The tunnel connects the highway’s Kakanj-Bilješevo section.

HeidelbergCement’s subsidiary TBG BH delivered 47,000 m3 of top quality ready-mixed concrete to this highly important infrastructure project.
