Heelmeesters is a residential and business complex situated in the Eenhoorn area of Amsterdam, Netherlands. Eenhoorn was built in the sixties and seventies, and will be now transformed into a multifunctional area with a combination of high-quality living and working spaces. Heelmeesters consists of three buildings containing 179 rental apartments and 2,600 m2 business area atop of two car parks.

HeidelbergCement’s subsidiary Mebin recycled concrete granulates from the demolition activities in Eenhoorn to create sustainable new concrete. For this project, Mebin supplied 14,000 m³ of ready-mixed concrete and gave advice about how to optimally break concrete granulates for use in the specified concrete mixtures.

Mebin has an extensive expertise in the field of sustainable building and uses a ‘Carbon Calculator’ to compute CO2 released for each concrete type, including transport emissions. Based on these calculations, optimal choices were made relating to the manner of granulate breaking, the concrete mix designs, and transport to and from the various locations.

This project demonstrates that chain integration is possible as long as cooperation between the companies involved is established at an early stage.
