1915Çanakkale Bridge

After completion of the 3rd Bosphorus Bridge in 2016, HeidelbergCement is participating once more in a Turkish megaproject through its joint venture Akçansa. The 1915Çanakkale Bridge will be an imposing masterpiece of engineering.

Work began on the suspension bridge over the Dardanelle strait in 2017. Until now, this busy waterway has had to be crossed by ferry. The six-lane 1915Çanakkale Bridge is being built to connect the Turkish Aegean region and Europe, and to offer an alternative to the congested roads through Istanbul.

After its completion in 2022, the 1915Çanakkale Bridge will be the suspension bridge with the longest span worldwide (2,023 metres) and the largest bridge in Turkey. For the specific needs of this project, Akçansa, in close cooperation with universities, developed the special product “Betonsa 1803”. This building material can be processed in a record time of six hours, is resistant against all kinds of physical and chemical action, regulates heat development, and will allow the concrete to last for the anticipated lifespan of more than 100 years.

Six specially equipped production facilities have been set up on either side of the Dardanelle strait to ensure that concrete production remains stable under any weather conditions and that building material can be delivered to the project around the clock. A total of 235,000 cubic metres of ready-mixed concrete have already been used since the start of the project; another 150,000 cubic metres will be provided by the end of 2020.

A substantial economic boost is expected to result from this megaproject in Turkey: The regions of Thrace and Western Anatolia, where important service, industrial, and tourism companies are located, will be better connected. In addition, deliveries from countries of the European Union, especially from Bulgaria and Greece, will reach western Anatolia, the Aegean, and other regions on the Mediterranean Sea faster – instead of half an hour to an hour on a ferry, the strait will soon be passable in just four minutes.
