General Scope: Construction of a 2.9 km single carriageway bypass including a multi-span viaduct over the South Tyne river and Newcastle - Carlisle railway, and three other bridges.
The scheme necessitated close working between Hanson Contracting and Network Rail to ensure that construction of the multi span viaduct could be carried out safely in conjunction with the ongoing operations of the Carlisle to Newcastle rail line.

Innovation: • Co-location of a member of Network Rail’s team within the site offices to facilitate works involving the Newcastle - Carlisle railway line
• Use of Departures from Standard to reduce the target cost
• Revisions to vertical alignments to improve cut/fill balance
• Processing of site materials in lieu of imported fill
• Reduced disposal through use of material in environmental bunds, noise bunds and false cuttings
• Change to structure/earthworks interface to minimise viaduct structure size
Sustainability:
• Stringent environmental and ecological measures to ensure minimum disturbance to existing wildlife flora and fauna.
Achievements:
• Substantial value engineering during the design phase to deliver a target cost within the client’s budget.
