Sustainability

Using the lowest impact ggbs and cement from Hanson Cement gives you the potential to produce the most sustainable concrete.

For a start, our cement manufactured in the UK produces 5% less CO2 per tonne than the industry average using the most energy-efficient dry-process kilns. These burn up to 60% biomass and other wastes as fuels which would otherwise be disposed of without the energy being recovered.

We also use waste that would go to landfill as a source of raw material. Imported cement can add around 10% CO2 from shipping alone. Concrete produced using ground granulated blast-furnace slag (ggbs) from Hanson Cement, the only producer of ggbs from domestic iron production, can reduce greenhouse gases by 40% or more. ggbs can also improve long-term durability and performance of concrete.

Every tonne of cement and ggbs from Hanson Cement means an average of 500kg of landfill is avoided. We have reported every two years on our environmental performance since 1999 and made continual improvements.
