Hanson bricks - the natural choice

With high thermal mass, a product life in excess of 60 years and low or nil maintenance requirements bricks are a very sustainable solution to modern construction.  All of our bricks are produced in factories certified to ISO 9001 and many of them contain recycled materials.

High recycled content


A significant number of our bricks contain alternative or recycled materials, such as GGBS, PFA, wood chips, town ash, coal slurries,ceramic filter cake, crushed brick, colliery spoil & recovered sand. Many of our bricks have a recycled content of over 20 %, with some products containing over 40% recycled materials.

Our Oast House Multi Red product is made with reclaimed colliery waste, giving it over 40% recycled content.

Useful facts about bricks and sustainability

  • Thermal Mass - bricks contribute to thermal mass resulting in buildings which need less energy for heating and cooling and will cope better with climate change.
  • Insulation - bricks provide excellent heat and noise insulation and masonry provides a highly airtight structure if properly constructed.
  • Fire potection - bricks offer excellent fire resistance.
  • Flexibility -  brick buildings can be easily altered for re-use.
  • Recyclable - bricks can be recycled and any waste not recycled is inert.   inert.
  • A rated - walls built using Hanson bricks will normally have an A rating in the BRE Green Guide.
  • Future proof - Hanson bricks can also be used to build zero carbon homes to the highest levels of the Code for Sustainable Homes.
