Criagmillar is a pioneering adoptable development in Scotland that is leading the way in sustainable and environmental development. A 15 year urban regeneration programme is set to radically enhance and renew the area for the local population.

Landscape, architecture and sustainability are at the core of the development with a huge emphasis on reducing the impact on the environmentThe property developers at Craigmillar, EDI Group, required a highly reliable and sustainable paving system that offered a SUDS solution to comply with SEPA requirements. SEPA has requirements for two-stage treatment, pollutant removal and volume attenuation of all surface
run-off water (from permeable and non-permeable areas) and single stage treatment, volume attenuation for roof water. SEPA also stipulates that the costs of construction must be no greater than that of traditional drainage system.

The AQUAFLOW permeable surface passed all the stringent checks and criteria for road adoption enabling Edinburgh City Council to be the first local authority in Scotland to adopt a permeable paved road system. AQUAFLOW permeable paving is an ideal solution for this type of high profile development. The colour palate and workable, maintainable surface generates an attractive finish that satisfied Edinburgh City Council’s criteria.

EDI Group conducted extensive research during the design phase and the conclusion showed that AQUAFLOW was the best SUDS and longest established permeable paving solution on the market. Since installation it has performed extremely well. EDI Group insisted that their supplier was well established, experienced in permeable paving and be able to meet the product demands and phasing for the duration of the building at Craigmillar.

AQUAFLOW permeable paving effectively distributes water around the site eliminating the need to use ponds or wetlands or other space consuming SUDS solutions within the development.

Since the completion of the first phase, developers have noted a significant increase in consumer desire and interest for housing in this area.
