A new square for London

A new square has been built in Kensington, London, making extensive use of hand-worked Portland stone.

Wycombe Square is a development by St James Homes built in traditional town house style on the site of the old Campden Hill reservoir. Four- to seven-bedrooms townhouses are grouped around the new landscaped square with one- and two-bedroom apartments built in a similar architectural style. Eight homes have their own indoor private swimming pools.

Wide use is made of natural building materials including natural stone dressings. Hanson Bath & Portland Stone manufactured windows copings, quoins, entrance steps and porticos for the project, it total approximately 22,000ft of Portland stone. Masonry production was carried out at the company’s Keynsham works, near Bristol because of the bespoke nature of the work and the high degree of hand-finishing required.

The brick and stone contractor for the project was Irvine Whitlock.
