Abetong is focused on the development of new products and production processes not only within the company but also for companies in the business area. A close collaboration with and amongst the licensees has also proven to be very fruitful. The participation in CHARMEC provides Abetong with a better understanding of the functioning of the entire track structure including all its components and the problems related to them. This understanding has significantly improved the ability to enter into professional discussions with the end users of our concrete sleepers. Considered as part of the integral track structure, the sleepers can now more effectively be optimised. New alternative designs have been evaluated in co-operation with the CHARMEC researchers.
In 1997 a special Doctors of Engineering programme started within the HeidelbergCement Group. The programme combines the studies and research at the universities with managerial training within the companies. The intentions behind this programme are to supplement and support the long-term R&D activities that continuously have been invested in for many decades and at the same time enhance the technical knowledge within the managerial positions on a long-term basis. The activities to create networks amongst the doctoral students as well as between the academic world and the industry are also very important.
CHARMEC – Chalmers Railway Mechanics
Chalmers Railway Mechanics (CHARMEC) is a Centre of Excellence at Chalmers University of Technology in Göteborg, Sweden, established in 1995. An agreement on CHARMEC’s Stage 5 (1 July 2006 – 30 June 2009) was made in June 2006. The total budget for the three years is MSEK 50 corresponding to about 5.5 million EURO.
