Master’s project in Concrete Structures, for the Master Program Structural
Engineering and Building Performance Design:
Process induced prestress losses in long bed systems for railway sleepers
Abetong has over the last 45 years provided production and design knowledge for
prestressed concrete sleepers to about 35 plants around the world. The tendency over
the last years has been to optimise the sleepers for higher axle loads with existing
geometry of the sleepers due to the high investment cost for new moulds.
The optimisation requires more in-depth knowledge than the general relations given
in existing standards. Specific understanding of the parameters influencing the prestress losses given in our production process is of vital importance.
The thesis workk will include coupled temperature and structural FE-analyses. Results
from the measurements done at our plant will serve as an important input to the
thesis. If needed, complementary measurements at the plant of Abetong in Vislanda
could also be done.
The topic is of high interest for us at Abetong and consequently we will take an active
part in the progress of the thesis. Meetings and site visits at our plant in Växjö or at
the department of Structural Engineering will be held on a regular basis.
If you find the above topic interesting send your CV and grades from Chalmers to
both supervisors given below. The thesis is intended to be done by two students and
should be finalised before summer 2012.
