The market
Our activites are split into three divisions – quarry products, building products, and cement - which together operate about 350 manufacturing sites and employ more than 6,000 people.
The quarry products division produces sand and gravel from the land and sea, crushed rock, and asphalt for road surfacing. The division also operates a national contracting business specialising in road surfacing and infrastructure work. Hanson is one of the UK’s largest suppliers of ready-mixed concrete from a network of just under 200 fixed and site-based plants.
The building products division is the largest producer of clay bricks and aircrete blocks in the UK. Its product range also includes wall cladding systems, aggregate blocks, concrete and clay pavers, decorative rocks and stones, bagged products, concrete flooring and precast concrete products. The division includes the specialist brick and block laying contractor Irvine-Whitlock.
The cement division is a leading producer of Portland cement and ground granulated blast furnace slag (GGBS) – a cement replacement in ready-mixed and precast concrete. Castle Cement has manufacturing plants at Ketton in Rutland, Ribblesdale in Lancashire and Padeswood in Flintshire, north Wales. The company also has its own hydrocarbon recycling business SRM, which produces alternative fuels for the cement kilns.
