HeidelbergCement has been present in the USA since the acquisition of Lehigh Cement in 1977, and in Canada since 1993. Our production sites are mostly located in the eastern half of the USA, the Gulf Coast, the Pacific Coast and western Canada. Besides cement, we also produce ready-mixed concrete, prefabricated concrete products and aggregates.
The 15 cement plants, including two grinding plants, are located in Eastern USA, the Midwest, Alabama, California, Washington, and in the Western provinces of Canada. In addition to a large product range of grey cement, we also produce white cement in the USA. Nearly half of the Group-wide turnover in concrete is generated in North America. Our ready-mixed concrete production sites are located in several US states and Canadian provinces. Most companies operate their own sand and gravel pits. We also produce concrete blocks and pipes in North America.
Regarding turnover and results, North America is in a leading position in the Group. Since the production capacities of our plants are fully utilised, the high cement demand in the USA can only be met by additional imports from other regions. Our tight network of cement terminals guarantees the supply of the big market regions.
