Overview

HeidelbergCement entered the Russian market in 2001 by the acquisition of the Cesla cement plant in the St. Petersburg area in Northwest Russia. In 2006 HeidelbergCement acquired a majority stake in the aggregates and precast concrete manufacturer Gurovo Beton located in the Tula region south of Moscow. At this location a new cement plant is currently being built with a production capacity of 2 million tonnes. This plant will supply the greater Moscow region, Russia’s biggest cement market.

The market

The Cesla plant located in Slancy, not far from the Estonian border has a stable position in the St. Petersburg market and supplies its customers with various types of high quality cement. Logistics gives Cesla an advantage, as direct truck deliveries to the customer’s silos are cheaper than the combination of rail and terminals. This together with good customer service is helping to gradually increase the market share. HeidelbergCement is also a supplier of ready-mixed concrete in the St. Petersburg market. In 2007, production of aggregates was started in the Tula region.

The Moscow and St. Petersburg markets will provide HeidelbergCement with an excellent platform upon which to capitalize on the dynamic development of the cement demand in Russia.
