Overview

By entering India in 2006, HeidelbergCement has consistently continued its strategy of making targeted investments in fast-growing markets. With the acquisition of majority stakes in Mysore Cements and Cochin Cements and the participation in Indorama Cement, we have secured a good base for supplying the attractive growth regions of Mumbai, Bangalore, and Bhopal. Following the merger with Indorama Cement Ltd, Mysore Cements Ltd was renamed HeidelbergCement India Ltd in 2009.

The market

In India, HeidelbergCement operates two cement plants and three grinding facilities in the south and west, as well as in central India. We took the first step in establishing a long-term market position by founding a 50:50 joint venture on the west coast of India in March 2006. The cement grinding plant Indorama Cement supplies the cities of Mumbai and Pune. In August 2006, we acquired a majority participation in the cement manufacturer Mysore Cements. The company operates two cement plants and a grinding plant in central and southern India. At the end of 2006, we acquired the grinding plant Cochin Cements in southern India.

The expansion of our cement capacities in central India by 2.9 million tonnes is proceeding according to schedule. New facilities in our Damoh and Jhansi plants are set to be completed in the second quarter of 2012, with production scheduled to start then as well. HeidelbergCement will then have a total capacity of 6 million tonnes in India.
