The market
Hanson Hispania, based in Madrid, operates 10 aggregate sites (2 sand & gravel pits and 8 hard-rock quarries) and 16 ready-mixed concrete plants. The main markets where it operates are: Barcelona, Asturias, Bilbao, Madrid, Levante, Mallorca, Zaragoza, Valladolid, and Sevilla.
In 2011, the extremely high level of unemployment, the ongoing property crisis, and, in particular, the austerity packages introduced by the government and the regional administrations that resulted in heavy cuts in infrastructure expenditure have once again led to a significant decline in demand for building materials in Spain.
