The Challenge of Structural Changes
1973
Oil crisis and recession lead to considerable drops in cement shipments.
1977
Takeover of the American cement manufacturer Lehigh Cement Company in Allentown, Pennsylvania with five cement plants, one expanded clay plant and one furniture factory.
1978
1980
1982
Change of the company name to Heidelberger Zement Aktiengesellschaft.
Lehigh takes over six cement plants from the US Steel Corporation.
Founding of Baustoffwerke Durmersheim in which sand-lime brick and gravel plants are combined; in 1983, the Istein lime and plaster plant is added.
Lehigh takes over the cement plants in York, Pennsylvania and in Cementon, New York.
Product Diversification and opening towards Eastern Europe
1985
In addition to geographic diversification, the increased expansion into additional areas associated with construction such as insulating materials, building chemicals, concrete products and natural stone starts in 1985.
1988
Commissioning of the new plaster and mortar plant at Mainz-Weisenau.
1989
Development of the building materials technology operating line through the acquisition of the Deitermann Group, Datteln.
1990
After the reunification of Germany, the company starts a large investment programme in the areas of plaster, sand-lime bricks, concrete products and aggregates in the new federal states.Holdings in the Hungarian cement plants, Beremend and Vác, in 1989-90 as well as in the plants, Radotin and Králuv Dvur in the Czech Republic in 1991-92.
1991
Consolidation of the building chemicals activities in the newly founded Heidelberger Baustofftechnik GmbH.
Entrance into the operating line of concrete products through the acquisition of Baustoffwerke Wittmer + Klee as well as a holding in Kronimus AG.
New gypsum locations in northern and eastern Germany through takeover of the Rocogips Group.
