The Great Depression and the War Years

Drastic drops in sales volumes lead to some shutdowns of operations at times during the years 1929 to 1933 at the company’s plants.

1945

For the first time, cement shipments pass the mark of one million tonnes.
Change of the company name to Portland-Zementwerke Heidelberg Aktiengesellschaft. The Blaubeuren cement plant becames a group plant.
Severe bomb damage to various plants, especially in Mainz-Weisenau.
The plants are occupied by the Allies. The company, which had been placed under blocking of property by the American military command, is put under the administration of three trustees.

The Reconstruction Years

Development of the gypsum and plaster operating lines through the start of operations at the gypsum plant in Neckarzimmern in 1948 and the acquisition of the Sulzheim gypsum plant in 1953.

First excavator replaces manual work, 1955

Entrance into the ready-mixed concrete industry, which is still young, by holdings in several small to mid-sized ready-mixed concrete companies.
Acquisition of a two-thirds interest in the transportation and freight forwarder, Kraftverkehr Bayern (KVB), Munich.
Holdings in the French cement company Vicat and Südbayer. Portland-Zementwerk Gebr. Wiesböck & Co. GmbH, in Rohrdorf, southern Bavaria.
Production start of concrete admixtures in Leimen, which by 1975 carry the trademark “Addiment”.

1972 Cement shipments of 8.3 million tonnes reach a new high.
