A Week Dedicated to Safety
Safety week – an important event at HeidelbergCement
HeidelbergCement organised its third Group wide “safety week” at the end of September 2013. Around 40,000 employees of HeidelbergCement companies and those from contracted companies, together with their families, attended numerous events in many countries under the motto: “Safe work for a healthy life.”
“Looking back on this year’s activities, it fills me with great pride to see that the quality of safety week has gotten even better, and that acceptance has increased significantly,” says Dr. Klaus Hormann, Group H&S Manager. “The event addresses important issues – such as first aid or emergency preparedness – but, many companies also focussed this year on other crucial topics, such as safety leadership and behaviour, as well as high-risk activities, like work at height and driving.”
The annual safety week has become a key component of HeidelbergCement’s H&S training landscape, with the occasion used to hold intensive training workshops. During safety week, H&S champions are nominated and safety awards are presented.
One reason for the success of safety week is that companies have adopted best practice examples from other countries, such as last years’ ‘Family Safety Day’ from Lehigh Hanson in the US, which was adopted by Hanson UK. Furthermore the intranet platform was used intensively by Hanson UK to support the distribution of safety messages. Patrick O’Shea, CEO UK: “During our safety week, we focussed on workplace safety, employee health and well-being and driver safety. We also included a series of conference calls and tool-box talks – supported by additional online tools, including podcasts on Unite. The week was very successful, with the vast majority of our employees taking part and helping to spread the message that safety is our number one priority.”
