ESOS certification at Hanson UK

Hanson UK relies on certified energy management

Cutting emissions, saving money and even helping to win new business – gaining the global energy management ISO 50001 standard will be a big plus for Hanson UK in many regards. The company is the first in the industry in the UK to achieve the efficiency certification for all its operations.

Competitive advantage through efficiency certification

Senior sustainability manager Martin Crow led the implementation and is delighted with the certification, which was achieved in September 2015. “It puts us ahead of the game as our major competitors do not have it across all business lines,” he said Martin. “I expect 50001 will soon become a requirement to tender for major contracts, as other ISO accreditations already are. Achieving it also means we are compliant with the new Energy Savings Opportunity Scheme (ESOS) legislation, which came into force in January 2016.”

The standard covers measuring, recording and reducing energy use, along with training and procurement. “It shows we are serious about improving our energy performance,” explains Martin Crow. “Many of its requirements were already part of our Integrated Management System (IMS), but ISO 50001 requires a greater focus on energy and, in particular, recording the improvements we are implementing. Having identified the gaps that needed filling, there was quite a bit of work involved in making and communicating the necessary changes.”

Thirteen activities across nine sites were visited by auditors during the assessment. And there will be more audits each year for the annual review process.
