The AUD 491 million (EUR 340 million) Ballina Bypass development in New South Wales, Australia, included a 12.4 kilometre dual carriageway, 11.9 kilometres of local roads, 19 bridges, and more than 1.7 million cubic metres of earthworks.

It stretches from south of Ballina at the junction of the Bruxner and Pacific highways to north of Ballina at the junction of Ross Lane at Tintenbar.

HeidelbergCement’s subsidiary Hanson Australia supplied 8000 tonnes of sand and various concrete mixes for the project’s road-paving requirements.

As part of the project, Hanson Australia designed a simple but effective high-quality drainage system. The construction of the drainage layer under the sand stockpile at Hanson’s Tweed quarry has ensured consistent moisture content of the fine sand supplied to the project. This is critical to the quality of the concrete produced on a project as large as the Ballina Bypass.
